YYGS: A convention with those brightest minds
2016级 IBDP 一班 奚丞昊

First Half

This July, I went to New Haven for a summer school program held by Yale University (YYGS) to experience university academic life. My session is SDSE (Sustainable Development and Social Entrepreneurship), a study incorporating a wide range of social science subjects. But, instead of learning new knowledge, I have made connections with new people and learnt from them. This is more important.

LUX ET VERITA: Light and Truth

Part 1 What is YYGS?

YYGS (Yale Young Global Scholar) is a competitive two-week summer school program organized by the prestigious Yale University. The program aims to nurture students’ leadership and enrich their academic knowledge. This year, the sessions held by YYGS include:
Sustainable Development & Social Entrepreneurship (SDSE)
Frontiers of Science & Technology (FST)
Applied Science & Engineering (ASE)
International Affairs & Security (IAS)
Politics, Law & Economics (PLE)
Biological and Biomedical Science (BBS)
21st Century Asia (to be held at Yale Beijing Centre)
Such a broad selection of the session can satisfy most students’ academic interests and all of them are taught by students and professors at Yale University.

Me and my friends at a breakout session

Besides lecture and breakout sessions, I also needed to attend different seminars. Before the start of this program, YYGS will give you a seminar handbook to help you choose your favorite seminar. I will have to attend eight seminars in total. As a student interested in economics, I chose lots of seminars concerning the problems of income inequality and the effectiveness of trickle-down economics. The seminar is unlike the class we take every day, where we just sit in the classroom listening to teachers. The seminar is kind of like an interactive activity which allows you to learn something in a real scenario. Or simply put, it is kind of like CAS in IB – learning by doing. Taking the seminar about income inequality as an example, instead of teaching us knowledge of this topic, the instructor separated students into Democrats and Republicans to have a debate over the topic of income inequality. Each party should evaluate income inequality in a way that is advantageous to them. In this way, we can learn things in a scenario, leaving us with deeper impression.

Last but not least, each YYGS student need to complete a capstone research project before the end of the session. Capstone is a grouped research project based on the theme you were assigned to before the program. Mine is responsible consumptions and productions. Not my favorite, but I still learnt a lot when cooperating with students from different culture backgrounds. And finally a presentation will be given to all the students. It is a good opportunity for the participants to cooperate with people from different cultural backgrounds. Initially I found that hard, but gradually when that layer of ice is broken, things will get smooth and easy.

My capstone group

To be continued
